For your consideration, we are offering for sale this spectacular Restored Circa 1923 Waterman #55 Black Chased Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Rare 5 sized Waterman Music Nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
I have ultrasonically cleaned the feed and section. I have hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. I have cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the Nickel plated Waterman Clip, Filled Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #5 MUSIC NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber in a chased pattern. The coloring is gorgeous displaying deep black coloring with no oxidation. The chasing is clean and crisp. The lever box assembly is crisp and clean with "IDEAL" on the lever easily seen with the naked eye and wear The Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap clip displays just a touch of wear on the right-hand side of the ball of the clip. All Nickel trim has been polished to shine brightly. This Waterman 55 barrel has a fair to light imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23 1899 WATERMAN'S FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. PAT'D MAY 23, 1899 & AUG 3, 1903 U.S.A". The butt end of the fountain pen has a clean and crisp 55 imprint. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #55 measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 7" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.
This Waterman has a WATERMAN #5 sized Music Nib (3 tine nib). The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring 1.33mm when measured with digital calipers - a double broad nib point. This nib is a little later than the pen body but it a 5-size nib for a 5 sized pen. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an Extra Fine to Quadrupple stroke/line variation. The extra fine line measures roughly .42mm with light pressure on the horizontal strokes and the quadruple plus broad strokes measure at 3.51mm with light to normal pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink. NOTE: This Nib has a very tiny fissure on the right side of the breather hole, it is very tiny that the photos can't pick it up but it is there. It does not hinder the functioning/writing of the nib and have to point it out for clarity sake. I have owned several Waterman Music nibs but they have been #2 sizes. I have seen a #4 once. I have never seen a #5 and this nib is extremely scarce and that is why I have the price where it is.
This antique Waterman #55 Black Chased Hard Rubber Fountain Pen has an extremely scarce Waterman #5 Music Nib that collectors desire. I would consider the condition of the body of the fountain pen to grade in Excellent condition. The nib may need some attention at some point to weld the fissure if one chooses but in the condition it is in, it writes very well. This Waterman #55 Fountain Pen is in ready-to-write condition or just add it to your writing arsenal collection.
